Yorkshire Dale of the Month - Wensleydale

Wensleydale is one of the most famous of the Yorkshire Dales. Lying in the heart of the National Park and close to Castle Bolton and the picturesque Aysgarth Falls this months featured project is a 4.64-hectare (11.46-acre) semi natural ancient woodland site. 

The woodland is on two sides of the Beldon Beck gill and comprises mainly of ash although many dead elms can be seen. It has been undergrazed for many years and as a result has lost much of its woodland character and many of its smaller trees - a familiar story in an area of grazing such as the Dales.

The site is currently grazed so the woodland will be fenced to protect it against future stock damage. It will then be planted with approximately 3,500 trees to augment the remaining trees already on the site. These new trees will include Ash (which at this time of year can be identified by their deepblack buds and (on many trees) by the brown ash keys which are often retained until the buds begin to break), Hazel, Hawthorn Wild Cherry, Birch and Rowan.

This £8,000 project carries the full support of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is also part funded by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Forestry Authority.

With this additional funding the cost of the project to the Woodland Trust is just £600.
