Planting
trees for a greener Yorkshire Dales
One of Britain’s best known landscapes, the Yorkshire Dales, is now the focus of a ground-breaking woodland project. The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, aims to reforest areas of the Dales, which is covered by only one per cent of native woodland, compared to five per cent in the rest of England. The Trust has launched an appeal for funds to make the project a reality
Mike Townsend, the Woodland Trust’s chief executive, says: ”There is no doubt that the emphasis of land management in areas like the Dales is diversifying. We will do what we can to make woodland a more attractive option during this time of change. The work will also mean protecting areas where stock animals graze preventing the regeneration of trees. We are calling on landowners, farmers and conservation organisations to consider woodland planting as an option.”
The Trust has joined forces with conservation bodies concerned with the future of the Dales (including English Nature, The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority) to launch a major project to respond to threats to woodland in the Dales. By launching a national appeal, which will be sponsored by Persimmon plc, the Trust aims to stimulate £600,000 worth of work in the Dales on much needed tree planting and protection. By matching public donations with existing grants and Trust funds it is hoped that every £1 donated to the public appeal will be turned into £3 for the work.
Yorkshire-born Woodland Trust supporter, Dame Judi Dench, says: “I can’t imagine the Yorkshire Dales without woodland. Woods frame this beautiful landscape, acting as a sanctuary for a great deal of wildlife. It worries me to know that bit by bit this precious woodland is disappearing. By supporting the Woodland Trust everyone can play an important part in revitalising it before it is too late.”
Well-known Yorkshire artist, Ashley Jackson, has also put his name behind the campaign by producing an original commission, illustrating the unique beauty of Dales woodland. The Trust has produced limited edition prints of this beautiful painting to give to the first 500 people who donate £150 to the appeal.
If you wish to support the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project we will ensure donation money will be 'geared up' through the unique partnership agreements of this new project, to maximise the impact of your money in creating and protecting woodlands in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
Because
of the unique partnerships agreements of the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project in
most cases, every £1.00 donated to the project will result in £3.00
being utilised to protect, plant and manage woodland.
