International support from the world of art and literature grows for the Yorkshire Dales Landscape appeal

Jilly CooperAuthor Jilly Cooper, the most recent supporter of the project says: "I was thrilled and delighted to hear about the Woodland Trust's project to preserve and restore woodland throughout the Yorkshire Dales, where I used to wander so joyfully in my youth. Amazingly, only one per cent of the Dales are cloaked in native woodland, so it's reassuring to see this precious landscape being restored and enhanced. I urge everyone to support the Trust and this exciting new adventure."

Changes in farming and grazing by sheep have led to a steady loss of trees and woods in the Dales, the Trust continues to work in a variety of new ways with other landowners to reverse this backward trend - planting new trees to connect existing woods, repairing fences and walls to keep sheep out of dying woodland, protecting young trees from weeds, when possible purchasing valuable ancient woodland.

Yorkshire born Dame Judi Dench explains "I can't imagine the Yorkshire Dales without woodland. Woods frame this beautiful landscape, acting as a sanctuary for a great variety of wildlife. It worries me to know that bit-by-bit this precious woodland is disappearing. By supporting the Woodland Trust everyone can play an important part in revitalising it before it's too late."

The blend of the arts and the landscape was first forged by Yorkshire's best loved internationally renowned watercolour artist. Ashley Jackson kick-started the fundraising appeal by capturing one of the Woodland Trust's most well visited properties, Lower Grass Wood in the heart of Wharfedale, in an exclusive commission which he painted to support the appeal.
