 Yorkshire Dales Landscape Appeal supporter Auriel Hill recently returned to the Dales some 50 years on from her first visit when, as a 10 year old school girl she discovered for the first time, the beauty of Wharfedale. Judith Stuttard from the Woodland Trust explains "When we received Auriel's donation I simply had to meet her to find out more about her memories of what she described as a 'profound and formative
experience'. She traveled from her home in Kent to Wharefedale last month and after enjoying nostalgic wanders, Auriel kindly agreed to us reproducing her school journey diary. It provides a fascinating insight into the wonderful world of a little girl as she discovers a beautiful
landscape." (Auriel is fifth from the right).

for school journey 10-17th May, 1952

In May 1952 I was 10 years old. I've never forgotten that year.... the year I discovered
Wharfedale. In May of this year I returned and some 50 years on, I rediscovered both the beauty and the
child........
I would like to share my school journey diary with you, reproduced below in it's original

"Trees have nourished me over the years and my heart remains forever in
Wharfedale. To support the Woodland Trust financially is, for me, an obvious thing to
