New native planting in Bishopdale

Bishopdale before native tree planting

Bishopdale before native tree planting

The Yorkshire Dales Landscape appeal has enabled us to undertake new native planting on 2.3 hectares of land on the northern side of Bishopdale. We have been able to help this become a viable project by making funds available to add to those of other organisations including The National Park, The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Forestry Authority.

Land and Property Manager Peter Leeson explains
"We are very pleased to see this new woodland planting within the beautiful valley of Bishopdale - very much in the heart of the National Park. This small planting links the valley floor with a steep slope up to a herb rich meadow beyond which are two further strips of woodland - one of which is ancient - and then the open moor. It is an excellent example of the type of project we wish to pursue in the Dales recreating woodland where there was once woodland. In this case the site was cleared of woodland relatively recently (probably within the last 40 years) and the stumps of the previous woodland are still visible in the ground. As with so many sites around the country the loss of woodland went almost un-noticed all those years ago but lets hope the return of woodlands will very much be noted!”

If visiting the area you can see the wood from the minor road, which runs up Bishopdale, or from the footpath, which runs parallel to road and Bishopdale Beck, on its western side.

In support of the project, famous artist Ashley Jackson has produced an original commission, illustrating one of the Trust woods in Wharfedale. The Trust has produced limited edition prints of this beautiful painting to give to the first 500 people who donate £150 to the appeal. Visit Supporting the Project for further information.

If you wish to support the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project we will ensure donation money will be 'geared up' through the unique partnership agreements of this new project, to maximise the impact of your money in creating and protecting woodlands in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Because of the unique partnerships agreements of the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project in most cases, every £1.00 donated to the project will result in £3.00 being utilised to protect, plant and manage woodland.
