Foot and mouth in the Dales

The impact on the Dales project

Land and Property Manager Peter Leeson explains the effect the current situation is having on the progress on the ground of the Yorkshire Dales project.

"It is very sad but we, like many others in a similar position, have had to stop all land based management activity where it could conceivably bring about the spread of this awful disease.

"Obviously the Dales project has suffered as a result our first few projects are now 'on hold' until at least the all clear is given by MAFF. We are very unlikely to get any trees planted until the next planting season later this year. We remain optimistic that this will not affect the long-term agreements we have with our partners over the allocation of land and with grant incomes.

"I am confident that with such a crisis on our hands there will be a collective view that everyone will adhere to their commitments made prior to the disease hitting our shores."

What you can do to help

  • We urge everyone not to visit Woodland Trust woods in the Yorkshire Dales in an effort to help reduce the risk of spreading the "foot and mouth" virus.
  • We still need your support for this new project - do you have family and friends who maybe interested to visit this site, if so please let them know our address
  • For the latest developments keep visiting the Dales Diary, already 800 people have visited this site in our first four weeks and there is much enthusiasm to make this exciting new initiative a real success story.

Looking forward to Spring-time

One positive thought is that after the extended British winter - with its snows and frosts - wildlife will be beginning to think about Spring. You may well already have noticed an upsurge in bird activity in the back garden or in your local area. The Yorkshire Dales - whilst few people are there to see it - will be waking up and by the time we are able to freely visit again another season will be thoroughly underway!

Because of the unique partnerships agreements of the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project in most cases, every £1.00 donated to the project will result in £3.00 being utilised to protect, plant and manage woodland.
