Yorkshire Dale of the month - Malhamdale
Malhamdale is one of the most popular and well visited of the Yorkshire Dales. Lying in the heart of the National Park and famous for the picturesque Malham Cove and Malham Tarn.
Our first site for the Yorkshire Dales Project is at Tranlands Gill a new planting site of some 3 hectares (7.4 acres).
This gill is of particular landscape value and already contains ash, oak, alder, hazel, birch, rowan and hawthorn.
By planting new native broadleaf trees we will be creating a new wildlife habitat and added protection for the existing flora. The site is currently grazed so the new woodland will be fenced to protect it against stock damage. This will include the repair of existing dry stone walling.
This project carries the full support of the Yorkshire Dales National
Park.
With funding from the Forestry Authority and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust the cost of the project to us is just £4,100.
We will fund part of this shortfall with part of a legacy kindly left to the Trust by Mrs Anne Appleton, all of her generous legacy will be utilised to create new woodlands and protect ancient woodland in the Yorkshire Dales.
Through Mrs Appleton's generosity and vision and by working in partnership with other like-minded bodies we will have been able to create an important new gill woodland for a fraction of the overall project costs.
If you wish to support the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project we will ensure your money will be 'geared up' through the unique partnership agreements of this new project, to maximise the impact of your money in creating and protecting woodlands in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.
