Dales Diary

July

The Yorkshire Dales project has recently gained the support of internationally renowned watercolour artist Ashley Jackson. Ashley’s love of the Dales is well known and he has kindly agreed to undertake an exclusive commission of one of our woods in Wharfedale.

Limited editions prints and a specially design certificate will be available later in the year as gifts to supporters of the project who offer to make a generous donation to the project.

Ashley Jackson“I was deeply honoured when the Woodland Trust approached me to ask if I would consider capturing in watercolour one of their woods in the Dales.
Many of you already know, I have had a life long love affair with the landscape of Britain, in particular the uplands of Yorkshire, and have spent the last 38 years devoted to capturing the wonderful power, strength, magnetism and beauty she possesses. I have long believed that these gifts are very precious and often taken for granted as mans political greed overshadows our very reason for living.
We sometimes all need to take a moment to stand and appreciate the natural and fabulously awe inspiring beauty we are fortunate to have been bequeathed, and make a stand to protect it, before it is too late and disappears altogether from our existence.
If it were not for organisations such as the Woodland Trust, who endeavour not only to protect what we still have, but try to repair the damage that we have already caused to the landscape, then we really would have to seriously fear the future for our next generations.
One can appreciate why I was so proud to be involved with the Trust and I hope that all those who support the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project will enjoy the print of the scene I have captured which looks down onto Wharfdale and across to Lower Grass Wood.
I have spent an enormous part of my life capturing the wonderful beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, which, although fabulously wealthy in beauty, is still very fragile and requires protection. The sooner we all realise this, the more hope we have in saving her. That is why I would like to take this opportunity of personally thanking all those supporters of the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project. Without people like yourselves, who are at the forefront of environmentalism, the world would truly be a poorer place.”
