Background to the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project

Dame Judi Dench
“I can't imagine the Yorkshire Dales without woodland. Woods frame this beautiful landscape, acting as a sanctuary for a great variety of wildlife.
It worries me to know that bit by bit this precious woodland is disappearing. By supporting the Woodland Trust everyone can play an important part in revitalising it before it's too late."

Dame Judi Dench, Woodland Trust supporter

The Yorkshire Dales contains some of the UK's most threatened  woodland.

Our native woodland accounts for just over 1% of this National Park.

In the Yorkshire Dales, there are just a few remaining pockets of semi natural ancient woodland, our richest wildlife habitat. Yet even these have been threatened. Ancient woodland has been managed for many years by man and is of great value as a reservoir for a fascinating variety of plants and animals - it is also a valuable landscape feature and historical record.

Preston Under Scar Much of what remains has been poorly managed in recent years and some woods have disappeared completely under the pressure of grazing animals and changing land management practices. Woodland is just one of a variety of important habitats in the Dales but, if we don't save what remains, the natural variety will suffer even more in years to come.

The Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project is a groundbreaking new project. We are now working alongside farmers, landowners and local agencies to help protect, link and extend the remaining fragments of semi natural ancient woodland.

The Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project is:

  • helping people to understand why ancient woodland is important

  • providing positive incentives to encourage land managers to restore or conserve it

  • buffering and protecting it from damaging external threats by planting new native trees

  • encouraging others to take positive action and lead by example.

If you would like to talk in detail about the project please phone Judith Stuttard, Development Officer, on UK 01484 609510 or international +44 (0) 1484 609510 or alternatively email.

Because of the unique partnerships agreements of the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Project in most cases, every £1.00 donated to the project will result in £3.00 being utilised to protect, plant and manage woodland.
