At 12.9 hectares (31.8 acres), Drumlamph Wood is one of the Trust’s largest community woods in the UK. It can be found just north west of Maghera town, in the south east of County Londonderry, and is particularly significant as it adjoins a rare piece of precious ancient woodland. The ancient woodland, which has been traced back to 1599, is now also secure in the ownership of the Woodland Trust.
Take time to look at the millennium centrepiece! A clever wooden carving by sculptor, Raymond Watson. The carving reflects the flora, fauna, folklore and mythology of the area. Very apt that it has been named ‘Dúlra’ – the gaelic word for ‘nature’.
John Bragg, the Trust’s woodland officer enthuses: “The project at Drumlamph is an excellent example of the importance of working in partnership. It was the Carntogher Community Association who brought the land to our attention. Their on-going support has been critical to the success of this project.”
