Protecting trees and woodland

UK law does not give 100 percent protection to any ancient tree or ancient woodland.

There are some designations that can be used to assist in your objection:

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) in England, Wales and Scotland.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Even if a wood or tree is not covered by a TPO it is worth investigating whether or not the site has any legal protection of its own such as a statutory designation.

Any work involving trees on the following sites will need prior approval from the relevant agency:

Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI or ASSI in Northern Ireland)

National Nature Reserve (NNRs)

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

Special Area Of Protection

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) in Northern Ireland.

Trees in relation to construction are covered by a British Standard BS 5837.

Tree Work is covered by British Standard 3998 which is currently under review.
