Presenting your case at planning committee
Planning applications may be dealt with by 'delegated authority'. The case
officer can consider all the information, make a decision and issue the notice.
This is usually the case in respect of smaller applications that are considered
by the authority to have only minor implications or thought to be
non-contentious.
It is useful to ascertain at an early stage whether an application will be dealt
with in this way as it may affect your timings as to other activities.
The alternative is for the application to be considered by a Planning committee
or Development committee (they go by various names). Sometimes when approval
will be of district wide significance, the decision might be made at a full
Council meeting
In most cases, the case officer will after several weeks be able to provide an
indication as to the likely committee date. These dates are set out for some
period ahead and tend to follow a monthly pattern differing between planning
authorities eg the second Tuesday of every month.
Sometimes but not always, depending on the Council policy, it may be possible to
book a very short slot to talk through your objection before the committee if
you have sent in a written formal objection.
Ask at an early stage whether this might be possible and ensure you know the
precise terms and conditions of this opportunity otherwise it might prove a
wasted exercise.
