Express your concerns
In the case of development, if the applicant does not become aware of your
concerns at an early stage, there is less chance of looking for a solution or
compromise - if one indeeed exists, which is not always the case.
It is worthwhile setting out your complaint/concerns either at a meeting, by
telephone or in writing, ahead of submitting a formal objection or starting a
campaign. This can occasionally lead to an early resolution of issues to both
party's satisfaction.
Do not always expect a response or co-operation, but the contact may be useful
to extract further details, or to draw out the applicants attitude/stance, that
would help inform a formal objection or campaigns.
A developer will often want to avoid formal objections being submitted to the
planning authority as this could prejudice the chances of approval.
Not all threats to woodland arise directly from a planning proposal but the same
principle applies - let people know that you are not happy and the reasons why
at an early stage.
