Contacting the media
If you run a campaign of any substance it is likely to be of interest to the
local media at the very least and possibly regional or national media.
Tell them regularly about the campaign by phone and press releases. They might
have a space that needs filling!
However, bear in mind the media can very occasionally be editorially biased and
have decided that its majority readership/listeners want to support a proposal
such as a new road. It therefore could spin everything published in favour of
the project that you are trying so hard to defeat.
Feeding the press regularly with information and providing updates is worthwhile
and of course, it might help broaden your campaign support.
Newspaper reporters may decide to attend public campaign meetings, sometimes
incognito, so it is advisable to enquire at the beginning of the meeting if the
press is represented.
Always be prepared to give statements to the media or interviews to local
radio/TV and to maintain a consistent message. It is worth considering
nominating one person to do this.
