The local government ombudsmen

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own ombudsmen who can investigate complaints of injustice arising from maladministration by local authorities and some other bodies. They investigate complaints about many council matters including planning. They exist to investigate complaints about process rather than complaints where you disagree with what the council has done. The Ombudsmen should only be contacted if you have already complained directly to the council about the issue and have received an unsatisfactory response.

What you can do (open/close)

If you believe maladministration has occurred, first use the council’s own complaints procedure.

If you are not satisfied, then either get in touch with the Local Government Ombudsman yourself or get a councillor to do it for you.
