Local designations
such as Site of nature conservation importance (SNCI or SINC),
Site of local nature conservation importance (SLNCI) in Northern
Ireland, Wildlife site (County wildlife site in England and Wales, or
Listed wildlife site in Scotland), give no legal protection but local
development plans generally incline towards protection of these sites.
Historic parks and gardens (England and Wales) and Historic gardens
and Designed landscapes (Scotland) enjoy high
levels of policy protection in national planning guidance and special
consultation procedures but no direct statutory protection. These
designations particularly affect ancient trees.
Local nature reserves are declared by local authorities in association
with the statutory nature conservation agencies.
World heritage site is an international designation – such sites
usually have some other statutory designation to ensure their
protection since the World heritage site designation itself provides
no extra protection itself, but like all of the above is a material
consideration in a planning decision.
What you can do (open/close)
Find out if the site concerned is covered by a non-statutory
designation by looking at the local development plan, as this will
lend support to your case against a planning proposal.
