Plans for a second runway abandoned
Threat
Luton Airport's Plans to build a second runway would have damaged over 30 hectares of ancient woodland. Winchill Wood, Sewetts/Hurst Wood, Withstocks Wood and George Wood were all threatened by these plans.
What happened?
Through AirportWatch and the local group opposing Luton expansion the Woodland Trust was aware of plans for second runway.
A local resident contacted us to ask us to help develop a local event to highlight to ancient woodland.
We took the following steps:
- The Woodland Trust had opposed plans to expand Luton by making written representations since they were first published and had also been involved in AirportWatch the national coalition opposing airport expansion
- We engaged with the groups that had already been set up by local residents opposed to the expansion (SLAP and LADACAN)
- We organized a photocall with local children dressing up as animals to create a “Council of Animals” who went to visit one of the threatened woods and symbolically voted against the planned expansion
- This was to highlight the need for people to write in and oppose the airport’s masterplan which was one of the first steps in the planning process
This gained widespread coverage in the area and contributed to the local campaigns.
What happened next?
- The airport owners after large scale local opposition and a worsening financial situation abandoned the plans for a second runway. Saving the ancient woods.
What’s happening now?
- Local campaign groups are still fighting the threat to their local area from increased flights and insidious expansion of the airport.
