Meadowhall shopping centre, in Yorkshire, is encouraging
millions of shoppers to buy a unique reusable bag which will
help plant 1,000 trees with the Woodland Trust.
The bag’s slogan says ‘who said shopping has to cost the earth’
and has been designed to encourage shoppers to choose to refuse
plastic bags.
The bags cost £3.75, of which £2.65 goes to the Woodland Trust,
with the aim to reduce the amount of plastic being dumped on
landfill.
The large, attractive shopping bags are made of organic jute and
will be available for shoppers to buy from May and can be
purchased from the centre’s service desk.
Alex Claydon, from the Woodland Trust, said: “By taking the
simple step of declining a plastic bag and using Meadowhall’s
reusable shopping bag you are not only helping to reduce the
mountain of plastic being dumped on landfill but also helping us
plant 1,000 trees.”
Dawn Osborne, Meadowhall’s Head of Operations, said: ”Meadowhall
has a long track record of successful and award winning
initiatives in the environmental field and the creation of an
eco friendly shopping bag seemed like the natural next step. In
choosing to work with the Woodland Trust we have created a
scheme that not only encourages customers to stop using plastic
bags, but simultaneously funds the planting of new trees for
future generations to enjoy.”
