We had a good turn
out from CWN groups at our roadshow at Owley Wood in Cheshire on
Saturday 12th June, The woodland is owned by Cheshire Wildlife Trust
with much of the site management carried out by the Friends of Owley
Wood, some of whom live adjacent to the woodland which is very handy!
The group benefited from CWN funding earlier this year and were able to
show off their purchases and talk about the woodland training they
received. When the wood was battered by recent high winds the group were
able to quickly help out with tree safely work which a number of them
are qualified for.
Owley Wood is adjacent to the River Weaver and as such has a diversity
of tree species and other flora and fauna sloping steeply up from the
river to the housing at the top. A number of small streams run down
through the wood and into the river.
During out visit we walked along the boardwalk installed by the group
and BTCV to improve access, work which is ongoing. What struck us about
the wood was at the bottom we were probably less than 100 meters from
the housing at the top but with the sun glinting off the river and the
wind in the trees we could have been many miles form civilisation!!
The wood has some excellent old Oak and Ash, one of which is currently
home to a nuthatch and some good specimens of Sweet Chestnut, not common
in Cheshire. After the walk we retired to the adjacent scout hut for
refreshments and an update on other projects.
This was the last CWN roadshow for this year, however if you would like
to host an event at your wood and would like to show other groups what
you do then please do let us know
