Community Woodland Network
Grant Award Success
Chineham Conservation Volunteers are pictured here receiving their Community
Woodland Network grant cheque. This was the first meeting for the group this
autumn and it was fitting to open proceedings with the presentation of their
award.
The group is one of 21 across the UK to get a share of more than £20,000 in
cash grants. The money has been awarded by ourselves and Defra and will now
be used to help pay for tools, equipment, training and promotion in a bid to
help get more people involved in their thriving community projects.
Helping support the Chienham group, which is just outside Basingstoke in
Hampshire, with their woodland conservation work is very satisfying and it
was great to visit the group and present the cheque. It was also enjoyable
to help out with some of the coppice work they are undertaking in amongst
the oak standards. The group are planning to spend nearly £2,000 on tools,
training and the launch of its own dedicated website. We hope this will help
them attract even more local people to help out with the project.
We hope to run a similar grant programme in 2006/7 so watch this space for
further details in the new year.
