Join the British Beanpole
Campaign!
An individual’s change from bamboo to hazel beanpoles may not seem
significant in the grand scheme of things. Consider that the same decision
is replicated across only a few percent of the millions of gardeners in the
UK and the opportunities such a small change in behaviour can make are
substantial. In the process of achieving much greater reliance on locally
grown beanpoles many other direct and indirect benefits will be forthcoming
for UK woodland.
Our campaign focuses on a number of strategies for increasing opportunities
for people to obtain locally grown beanpoles. For example we plant up
derelict allotments in Ipswich to grow beanpoles and peasticks in-situ for
the neighbouring allotment holders. We also produce our own beanpoles from
conservation work parties, which we sell at our Annual Beanpole Festival.
From the start it was clear we could not supply everyone with beanpoles who
wanted them so we produced a directory of other local suppliers of beanpoles
as well as other woodland products for the garden. The directory has
expanded over the years into the only nationally available directory of
local woodland products and is available on our Web site -

In anticipation of Spring 2004 when we will be making a big push on
beanpoles we are looking to increase the number of contacts on our directory
and we are asking for help from CWN members. Does your group sell beanpoles,
peasticks, rustic poles or other wood products? We would be keen to hear
from you so we could put your details on our website. It is free and it
reaches 120 people on the average day! Likewise if you have details on local
woodmen that produce products such as fencing, charcoal and furniture as
well as beanpoles please pass these on to us so that we can contact them to
see if they want to be on the directory. You can contact me at 2 Five Acres,
