that many are now too old to reproduce.
In the past, the tree was highly valued for firewood and for making
gin, ensuring a constant turnover of plants.

Nabbs Wood Tragedy
On a bleak day in June 1838 Nabs Wood was about to be written into
history books as a tragic chain of events unfolded. In the village
of nearby Silkstone Common black smoke rose from the engine powering
the winch to the Huskar Pit where many of the local men, women and
children worked at least 12 hour stints in the hot, damp and acrid
coal seams which ran below the village. Early in the afternoon a
storm broke out starting with a rainstorm making a hissing sound as
it landed on the engine and then turning into a torrent of rain and
hail up to 4 ½ inches in diameter. Read more |

South Yorkshire Biodiversity Network need your help!
Have you ever wondered whether your wood is an ancient wood? The
South Yorkshire Biodiversity Research Group are producing an
archaeology field guide for woodland managers, and they are looking
for local groups to help them. They want groups with an interest in,
or knowledge of, their local woodland history, to test out elements
of the field manual and help them gather information about woodland
archaeology in different regions of the UK. Woodland archaeology
doesn’t just mean old buildings and ruins within a wood. It refers
to any features which are a part of a wood’s history: boundary
banks, charcoal hearths, and veteran trees, among others.

Good News - More Funding from Defra
One of our key project sponsors is continuing it's funding for
another 12 months. This welcome news comes when we are just at the
end of our first 3 years of the network. During this time we have
supported over 50 groups with woodland sustainability grants,
organised and delivered our first national conference and developed
and promoted the yourwoods website. Recently we have expanded the
role of the project and have helped many groups with small tree
planting grants through out Tree for All project. The news that we
have secured Defra's support for 2005/6 is really excellent news and
will help us to expand the network further and build on the 200 plus
groups we are already in contact with. One of our first tasks will
be the production of a landowners resource pack on woodland
acquisition and tree planting, and re- organising the national
conference this summer. Watch this space!

CABE Space's Manifesto - The Manifesto for Better Public Spaces
Public space is all around us, a vital part of everyday urban
life: the streets we pass through on the way to school or work, the
places where children play, or where we encounter nature and wildlife;
the local parks in which we enjoy sports, walk the dog and sit at
lunchtime; or simply somewhere quiet to get away for a moment from the
bustle of a busy daily life. In other words, public space is our
open-air living room, our outdoor leisure centre.
