Thanks to
everyone who came along to the Pepper Wood Roadshow on Saturday. We
had representatives from Park Wood, Oakley Wood, and the volunteers at
Pepper Wood to name but a few.
We started
the day with a guided walk from Hugh Jenkins and other wood volunteers.
The bluebells were just coming into flower on what must have been the
hottest day of the year so far!
Pepper Wood
has a long history of coppice management and it is great to see this
tradition being brought back within the wood and with such good results,
it was also interesting to see the various techniques employed to deter
Muncjac from eating the regrowth on the coppice stools, wigwams and
towers being a feature!
The wood
has a number of distinct compartments from the hazel coppice to high
oak and birch woodland with a variety of other species, hence the need
for sensitive management and conservation. An area of suckered Wild
Service Trees just breaking bud was a first for me! Further into the
walk we also saw at first hand the portable machinery used for
converting timber into planks and other saleable items.
Back at the
village hall and after lunch we had an update an open forum on the
Community Woodland Network and other new projects at the Woodland Trust.
If you are interested in attending one of
our forthcoming Roadshows and have the chance to quiz another woodland
group on their conservation work please let us know. We still have
places available on:
Saturday 15th May at
Batchwood - St Albans, Hertfordshire
and on
Saturday
12th June at Owley Wood - Weaverham, Cheshire.
Thanks again to everyone for getting the
roadshows off to such a good start especially the Pepper Wood Group for
hosting the day.
