Woods
and trees under threat
Ancient
woods have been around for at least 400 years and in some cases form
the last link with the original wildwood which covered the UK after the
last Ice Age, 10,000 years ago.
Ancient trees resonate with the history of the landscape and form
important markers in the lives of individual people and communities. They
also harbour a unique array of wildlife.
Despite their value ancient woods and ancient trees are under threat
across the UK. The Woodland Trust and Ancient Tree Forum have a
dedicated website on this issue at:
www.woodsunderthreat.info
On the site you can find interactive maps that show you where ancient
woods are located in Britain and also where the threats to ancient trees
and woods are. There is also a campaigner's guide to
help you fight cases of woods and trees under threat yourself with details
on the planning system, tree preservation orders, protected species and
many other issues.
