Commons and village greens

Binswood, Hampshire – Henry II declared it ‘folkland’ for the people of Great Worldham in 1134

Commons or open land used, at least in part, as traditional grazing land for commoners in the vicinity of settlements. At the start of the 18th century England and Wales still retained 7-10m acres of commons managed in an extensive way. It is the loss of much of this area which has changed our landscape profoundly.
