Newbattle Abbey Sycamore RIP - one of
Scotland's oldest and finest sycamore trees collapses. |
May 2006
One of Scotland’s Heritage Trees collapses
Report by Donald Rodger

|
Fortunately, no damage or injury was sustained.
The tree, which was an imposing and handsome specimen in its hey-day, has
long been recorded and celebrated, and features in the book ‘Heritage
Trees of Scotland’. The tree had been showing signs of decline for many
years, and was clearly in some distress. Examination of the shattered stump
revealed that, not surprisingly, the root and butt region was completely
decayed and hollow. Indeed, it was hard to see what had been supporting the
tree for so long, as there did not even appear to be a narrow ring of sound
outer wood! Such was the extent of the decay, it is unlikely in this case
that any pruning might have prolonged the life of this venerable old
specimen. A sad loss of one of Scotland’s heritage trees, and a timely
reminder of their mortality and vulnerability. |
