Blazing ash tree gets another chance.

Teds talk encourages local landowner to protect a wonderful local landmark tree.

Blazing ash tree gets another chance A couple of years ago it would not have happened. This local landmark tree, a hollow veteran ash pollard, some three quarters of a mile from the nearest road, was set alight by vandals but the fire was successfully extinguished by the local fire brigade. Not that tree fires are unique to the local fire brigade, but for a private landowner to bother when the tree was so far from any building or roads rather than let it take its chance and burn out. However, this landowner was at Ted’s lecture at the Marston Vale Community Trust in Bedfordshire. If the tree survives and it is too early to know the effect of the fire, we can thank Ted for it. A message of thanks has been sent to Ted. Many local people have expressed their fears that the tree may be lost. Many of the elderly locals remember the tree from their childhood, as a tree young courting couples sat under or, as younger children climbing it.

This is the second time the tree has been set alight and there is a great hollow and cavity allowing children to get into the tree and hide. How many ash are in that size and condition? The owners have requested advice as to how to stop up the gap to prevent people getting into the tree. They are talking about fixing a strong galvanised mesh across it. I was wondering what advice if any the ATF could give on this subject? Obviously the best thing is to discourage access in other ways. Fencing is not practical and I have suggested planting dog rose around the trees base, but possibly something needs to be done quickly. Any ideas or advice gratefully received – post an answer or suggestion on our talk to us page.

Our thanks to the Tree Register for this story.
